A fracture is a medical diagnosis when bone can not withstand outside applied forces and brakes. The break means the lost in the continuity and integrity of the bone with lost of bone structure.
Fracture Treatment
Cast Immobilization - A cast is the most common type of fracture treatment. Provides all the necessary repositioning and immobilization during healing
Functional Cast or Brace - The cast or brace allows limited or "controlled" movement of nearby joints.
Traction - Traction is usually used to align a bone or bones by a gentle, steady pulling action.
Open Reduction and Internal Fixation - In this type of surgical treatment of the fracture. The bone fragments get repositioned at first and then fixed together using immobilization tools (screws, plates, rods etc).
External Fixation - The type of surgical treatment of the fracture with external position of screws above and below the fracture site which then attached to a metal plate. Device removed after fracture healed.
Rehabilitation - Healing and recovery depends on type of fracture, location of fracture, how you follow your doctor’s recommendations and how active you participate in rehabilitation. It may take weeks to months to years to heal.
Rehabilitation working towards two goals - Maximally speed up healing and prevent or train muscles and ligaments to be strong again after prolong immobilization.
In the office of Dr. Tatz we incorporate all modern and state-of-art modalities for treatment and active rehabilitation of fracture in every day practice. Below you will find extensive describtion of each modality.
- Manual therapy
- Passive exercises
- Active exercises

- Vibration therapy and whole body vibration
We are among few offices in Metropolitan area where you can find most comprehensive hand-on technique and therapeutical modalities currently available on market.

Fracture Causes
1. Trauma is the most common cause of fracture.
2. Osteoporosis or osteopenia resulted in fragile bones is the next leading cause of fracture. It is the most common cause in elderly people and postmenopausal women. osteogenesis imperfecta is another condition with weak and fragile bones.
3. Cancer and bone metastasis predispose to fractures in these people.
4. Stress fracture is a result of overuse injury in athletes.
Types of fracture
• Closed fracture – a fracture when skin is intact.
• Open fracture – a fracture with muscles and skin damaged by fractured bones
• Simple fracture – a fracture with two bone pieces within one line.
• Multi-fragmentary fracture – a fracture with multiple pieces.
• Complete Fracture- A fracture in which bone fragments separate completely.
• Incomplete Fracture- A fracture in which the bone fragments are still partially joined.
• Linear Fracture- A fracture that is parallel to the bone's long axis.
• Transverse Fracture- A fracture that is at a right angle to the bone's long axis.
• Oblique Fracture- A fracture that is diagonal to a bone's long axis.
• Spiral Fracture- A fracture where at least one part of the bone has been twisted.
• Compression Fracture-A fracture that usually occurs in the vertebrae.
Fracture Healing
Bone healing is a natural process of bone restoration and remodeling to achieve full function of the bone. Bone fractures are typically treated by restoring the fractured pieces of bone to their natural positions and immobilization while the bone is healing.
Fracture Diagnosis
Diagnosis based on history and symptoms. Patient usually hears a snap or cracking sound with excruciating pain immediately. The limb becomes tender, swollen and may be deformed.
X-ray is done to confirm the diagnosis.
